Dr. Tenesa Rivera is a board certified psychiatrist originally from the Bronx, NY. Following her passion to serve others through a career in medicine, she moved to Philadelphia to attend medical school. She obtained her medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, completing the Women's Health Education Pathway with distinctions.
Embracing a desire to help people optimize the joy in their life, she chose to specialize in psychiatry, and thus trained in a rigorous residency program in psychiatry at Temple University Hospital. Dr. Rivera was drawn to the tender early developmental years and how it relates to overall wellness. As such, she pursued further training to sub-specialize in the treatment of children through a fellowship at Jefferson University Hospital in child and adolescent psychiatry, where she served as a chief fellow.
Dr. Rivera has been practicing for over 12 years and carries with her experience and knowledge obtained while serving in a broad range of areas, including outpatient, partial hospitalization, residential treatment facility, crisis response center and school settings. She served as an adjunct faculty member at Drexel University College of medicine supervising, educating and mentoring medical students and resident physicians.
With this rich clinical background, Dr Rivera maintains the knowledge and experience to comfortably diagnose and manage a wide-range of diagnosis and conditions. This includes anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. During these years, Dr. Rivera has treated many children and adults with ADHD, gaining insight into symptoms that are often overlooked as part of an ADHD diagnosis. This is particularly true in girls whose symptoms of ADHD may appear differently than in boys. For this reason, girls can be left undiagnosed or are diagnosed late in life, leaving behind a trail of challenges that could have been prevented. Dr. Rivera’s experience allows her to diagnose and treat accurately and efficiently.
Most recently, Dr. Rivera has been serving a diverse population of children, adolescents and adults in a community outpatient setting, providing treatment services for a broad scope of psychiatric diagnosis and emotional and behavioral challenges. She has also provided leadership and collaboration with multi-disciplinary treatment teams and agencies.
With the belief that each individual inherently possesses the tools necessary to heal, Dr. Rivera serves as a guide to help support each person discover his or her own potential, allowing self-empowerment to lead them through their individual journey of healing and being. She provides a safe space for each patient to feel seen and heard.
